Donating Blood Helps Community and Saves Lives
Established in 1972 the Sioux Falls Community Blood Bank strives to provide a safe, cost effective and reliable blood supply to 34 hospitals (including the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center) in northwestern Iowa, southwestern Minnesota, and southeastern South Dakota. The estimated collection requirement of the Community Blood Bank is 550 units per week to support the blood and blood product needs for all 34 hospitals.
Donating to the Community Blood Bank is convenient, thanks to a medically equipped bus called the ‘bloodmobile’ that arrives at pre-determined times and locations throughout the year. The Sioux Falls VA was one of the founding partners of the bloodmobile, which has been coming to the VA during normal working hours since 1991. This allows staff a quick and convenient way to help provide a valuable community service. The blood bank has recognized the Sioux Falls VA as one of the top ten contributors for the blood supply for at least the past 10 years.
As the Sioux Falls community continues to grow, so does the need for additional blood products. It’s estimated every three seconds a patient needs blood in the United States. The only way blood can be provided to local patients is through the generosity of volunteers donating to the Community Blood Bank.
Our next blood drive is January 22, 2019. Although walk-ins are accommodated as much as possible, appointments are recommended. We invite you to call 333-6815 or 333-6889 to schedule a time if you’d like to help our staff save lives by donating blood.
